SVG to PNG API

Rasterises an SVG to a PNG at a chosen resolution, returned base64-encoded.

Endpoint
POST /v1/svg-to-png
Price
$0.003 per call
Family

01When to use it

  • Rasterising an SVG safely needs a real renderer and a hardened fetch: an SVG can point at internal addresses, so an agent that renders one itself walks past every SSRF control, and the output must be byte-reproducible.
  • Your source is SVG and you need PNG.

When not to use it

  • The input is over 25 MB (26,214,400 bytes): svg-to-png answers too_large (413).
  • The destination needs more than 60 s to answer: the call ends with upstream_timeout (424).
  • The destination is on a private or local network: the network guard refuses it with blocked_target (403).

02Parameters

FieldTypeRequiredDescription
urlstringyesAbsolute http(s) URL of the SVG, up to 2048 characters; redirects are followed and the body must look like SVG markup; external references in it are never fetched.
widthintegernoTarget width in pixels, 1 to 20000; when width or height is set the rendered raster is resized to fit inside that box, keeping its aspect ratio, and may be scaled up.
heightintegernoTarget height in pixels, 1 to 20000; when width or height is set the rendered raster is resized to fit inside that box, keeping its aspect ratio, and may be scaled up.
densityintegernoRender resolution in DPI, 1 to 2400, default 96; the natural raster size scales with density / 72, so a 64-unit-wide SVG renders 85 pixels wide at 96. Default: 96.

04Example

The published example of svg-to-png, verbatim: the request body and the response it returns.

Request
POST /v1/svg-to-png
content-type: application/json
payment-signature: <base64 x402 payload>

{
  "url": "https://grist.tools/samples/images/svg-badge.svg",
  "density": 192
}
Response
200 OK
payment-response: <base64 settlement receipt>

{
  "source_url": "https://grist.tools/samples/images/svg-badge.svg",
  "format": "png",
  "width": 171,
  "height": 128,
  "bytes": 2021,
  "image_base64": "iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAKsAAACACAYAAAB0g5nsAAAACXBIWXMAAB2HAAAd..."
}

Sample file: images/svg-badge.svg. 64x48 geometric SVG badge (rounded card, circle, square and a rule, no text), so its raster carries no font-dependent pixels.

In the sample itself, the root svg element sets width 64, height 48 and viewBox 0 0 64 48, and below it come 2 rect, 1 circle and 1 path elements. In the returned PNG: its IHDR chunk declares 171 by 128 pixels, 8-bit truecolour RGB with alpha and no interlacing. The next chunk is pHYs.

08Questions

How much does a svg-to-png call cost?
$0.003 per call, paid in USDC on Base via x402, with no account and no API key.
What does svg-to-png return?
A JSON object with 6 top-level fields: source_url, format, width, height, bytes and image_base64. The example on this page is a real call over images/svg-badge.svg.
What happens when a svg-to-png call fails?
The tool answers with a typed JSON error from the errors table. Payment is settled only after the tool has produced its result; a call that fails inside the tool is never settled. A 503 upstream_unavailable can follow a settled call; the x402 payments guide covers it, 429, 402 and an uncertain 500.
